As usual our first formal event of 2012 is the “traditional” Burns’ Supper and Dance and, as always, we are hoping for a really good turnout of Members, friends and relatives to make the celebration go with a swing.

For those who have not been at a previous Burns’ Night Dinner Dance, the Desoutter Suite is on the ground floor of the hotel and has its own bar area where spirits, wines and beers can be purchased. Hotel staff will be on hand to take orders for wine with your meal in the foyer. Guests will be piped from the bar area into the dining room for our Traditional Burns Celebration.

The cost will be £37.50 per person.  This is slightly higher than last year, but the Committee has done its utmost to keep the cost down and negotiate the best deal possible in the face of food price and VAT increases.

To reserve your places, please complete the attached form and send it together with your cheque, made payable to MSCS, to Lis Perrin, to arrive by Tuesday 10th January, when we must confirm numbers with the hotel.

The hotel is offering a special rate to those who wish to stay the night in the hotel after the function: double room £94.00/ single room £82.00 including full English breakfast. To reserve your room, please contact the hotel directly on 01293 567070 and ask to speak to Vicky Newbon, the Events Manager or one of her Conference Team. Tell her you want to book a room for the MSCS Burns Night Function 21st January 2012 and she will ensure you get the special room rate. Early booking is advisable.

The hotel is situated at Gatwick North

From the M23/A23, follow the signs to the North Terminal. When nearing the Terminal, follow the signs to car parks, keeping in the right hand lane and go past the hotel entrance. Immediately afterwards, just as you go under the covered bridge linking the hotel and airport, turn right into the new multi-storey Sofitel car park

As last year, car parking will be complimentary. Guests need to have their parking ticket validated at the hotel reception. Please make sure that you use the car park on the right, and not the multi-storey on the left which is the airport car park where normal charges will apply.

Train and bus links with the airport are very good and there is direct pedestrian access to the Sofitel from the North Terminal.

Pre Burns’ Night Dance Practices

Sundays 8th & 15th January 2012

Old School Hall, Cuckfield

3.00pm – 5.00pm

We will be holding two dance practices prior to the Burns’ Anniversary Dinner Dance. They are informal, good fun and give us the opportunity to practise a few dances as well as socialise. Everyone (Members and their guests) is welcome. The cost for each practice session will be £2.50 per person to partially offset the cost of the hall. Soft drinks and biscuits will be served.

Ceilidh/Members’ Evening

Saturday 10th March 2012

Old School Hall, Cuckfield

This year we are proposing to run a Ceilidh for the March members’ meeting. We are sure that there is a considerable amount of talent within the Society, and this will provide an opportunity for anyone who wishes to show their party piece, be it a song, instrumental, recitation or even a sketch.

We now need to start putting together a programme, so if there is something you can do please contact the President, Carol Blake, on 01444 412125.

The Committee really needs your contributions to make this evening a success.

St Andrew’s Night Celebration

Village Hall, Wivelsfield Green

45 Members and guests attended the annual St Andrew’s Night Celebration on November 25th.  It was held at Wivelsfield Village Hall for the second year running, and again the venue and the catering proved to be an outstanding success.

The evening started with a welcoming drink ably served by Reg, to the accompaniment of a few tunes on the pipes from Michael Bates and David Anderson.  We then sat down to an excellent meal produced by Lulu, the caterer, and her team.

After the meal Chris and Lee Pratt led the dancing, with a break half way through for a few Scottish songs accompanied on the piano by Anne Baughan, a friend of Reg and Marion.

Thanks are again due to Laura for providing the excellent table decorations.

Action for Children

Haywards Heath Methodist Church

On October 22nd several MSCS members took part in a Scottish evening organised by Haywards Heath Methodist Church to raise funds for Action for Children.  Michael Bates and David Anderson played the pipes, and Chris and Lee Pratt organised a series of Scottish country dances, with the remaining MSCS members on hand to help the other participants and show them what to do. We received a very appreciative letter from the organisers thanking us for taking part and helping raise £600 for Action for Children.

Although the Rules of the Society state that subscriptions should be “due on the 1st June for the ensuing year,” it is usually the end of September when dues are paid. However, there are a number of Family and Single subscriptions that are still outstanding. Could you please check that you have paid yours or, alternatively, let us know if you no longer wish to be a Member.

The Committee send you Seasons greetings and wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.
